Triangle Area Repeater List


The tables below list the VHF and UHF repeaters that can generally be worked from
somewhere around the Triangle (Raleigh / Durham / Cary / Chapel Hill) area of North Carolina,
and some comments about their coverage. A few fringe coverage machines have been included,
and a few more distant, wide-area repeaters or vacation-destination machines as well.

This is a vacation repeater for Triangle area residents, one of the Outer Banks Repeater Association machines, located at Nag's Head/Kill Devil Hills.

I'm throwing this in because it's famous, the widest coverage repeater in the state, from the highest mountain east of the Mississippi.  (Actually, the repeater is on the next mountain over, Clingman's Peak, but everyone calls it the Mt. Mitchell repeater.)  You'll hear it in Raleigh during big band openings. Under typical NC band conditions, there is no problem between Mt. Mitchell and the Raleigh repeater. It's long-timer owner, WA4BVW, retired a few years ago and turned the repeater over to KE4RQL.

 This wide area PCRN repeater is at 1200 feet up one of the WRAL TV towers. It used to be on 147.195, but had some co-channel problems there. Danny K4ITL shuffled some other PCRN repeaters around to make 145.21 work in Raleigh. This repeater is used and sponsored in part by the South Wake Amateur Radio Club.

Note that 145.25 is the video carrier frequency for cable channel 18, and in many areas you may hear some cable leakage that will appear as a dead carrier on 145.25.

82.5 		This PCRN repeater has reappeared! Not real strong in the Cary area, so I'm not sure where it is, but it's back! (July 2012). This repeater has had a legendary history. For years, it was on 147.15, at about 1000' on a tower near Lake Wheeler. Old timers might remember it as being called "The Cary Repeater," and sort of the home of some Cary ARC members. It was eclipsed by the 146.88 machine long ago, changed frequency in a swap to get a new repeater up near Roanole Rapids (now on 147.15), was neglected for a long time, then off the air. Welcome back!
145.45 - Durham
WR4AGC		 Sponsored by the Durham FM Assn. (DFMA) , this machine provides local coverage from atop the VA Hospital in Durham. You can hit it mobile from the higher spots in Raleigh.

82.5		 This repeater now sports the call sign K4ITL (Danny Hampton), and is located near Capitol Blvd and Wake Forest Road, just north of downtown Raleigh. Coverage is good in Raleigh. HT coverage is spotty in Cary. Mobiles are spotty by Durham. This is the Wake County ARES backup repeater. Danny did a quick call sign swap following the surprise death of Frank Lynch W4FAL in 2012. The repeater began life as part of the Capital Amateur Radio Society. located on the tower at Capitol Blvd. and Wake Forest Rd. (inside the Beltline).  Trustee Billy Edwards K4BWC became a silent key in 2008. W4FAL took over as trustee of the memorial call sign W4BWC, and is still listed in the FCC database as trustee (July 2012). In 2011, Frank added a co-located UHF machine on 444.300 (now also signing K4ITL). 
146.52 National Simplex 146.52 is the National Simplex frequency.  Everyone should have it programmed in their radios. 

When you're driving down the highway and spot a car with an antenna and call letter plates, catch the driver's attention, and give the universal sign to go to 52 - hold up your hand with five fingers, then change to two fingers.  Be careful flashing those fingers - you may end up with a case of road rage rather than a pleasant contact as you mobile down the road!

 "Six-Four" is the flagship repeater of the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society . The repeater is located at the 250' (350' HAAT) level of a tower owned by the state, near the NC State Fairgrounds.  The antenna pattern favors the southeast, with a deep null to the norrhwest. Mobile coverage extends east to I-95, but the null limits coverage in the RTP/Durham area.

RARS' co-channel neighbor on 146.64 is just 90 miles northwest. That's why the RARS repeater has a deep null in that direction.

K4EG		 The Alamance Amateur Radio Club runs this repeater. It covers the western Triangle area pretty well.

The Dunn repeater shares the channel with a machine just across the Virginia line. Be careful from Raleigh that you're not keying up both of them.

 Fall 2005, off the air – this long-time Raleigh-area repeater was sponsored by Billy Edwards K4BWC, who became a silent key in 2008. Frank Lynch W4FAL, who became the trustee for W4BWC, decided that the area doesn't really need another two-meter repeater, and relinquished SERA coordination. (Frank became a Silent Key in 2012)

Part of the KD4RAA Repeater Group .  It's on the air from about 350' up a tower west of the fairgrounds and requires 88.5 Hz tone.   The repeater is part of the IRLP , which allows users worldwide to link repeaters via the internet.

118.8		 The Tar River ARC holds the call sign, but their web site says the repeater os operated by the Tri County Repeater Club. The repeater is on the Channel 47 TV Tower east of  Louisburg.  It has pretty good coverage into the Triangle from up there, and I'm told it works well up I-95 to Roanoke Rapids.

88.5		 OK, this is pretty far from the Triangle, but it's a favorite repeater during band openings and trips to the beach.  Operated by the Wilmington VHF Association , it's about 1700 feet up a TV tower in Winnabow, just southwest of Wilmington.  And it's part of the Piedmont Coastal Repeater Network .  You'll need 88.5 Hz PL to use this machine. It shares .82 with another wide coverage machine in Roaring Gap out in the mountains.

131.8 		 At 1200' up the UNC-TV tower in Columbia, the Columbia Emergency Repeater Association machine doesn't cover the Triangle, but it's wide coverage will serve you well on your trip to the Outer Banks.  You'll start hitting it just east of Rocky Mount.

 This is a medium coverage repeater operated by the Wayne County Amateur Radio Association that just tickles the southeastern fringe of the Triangle.  It's one of the  Possum Trot net repeaters.

WB4TQD  		At the 1400 foot level of the WRAL-TV tower, this is the flagship repeater of the Piedmont Coastal Repeater Network , which links repeaters across North Carolina and parts of Virginia, West Virginia and a bit of South Carolina.  The .88 machine is the primary SKYWARN repeater in the Raleigh area, and is frequently used by ARES.  It is also the home of the Piedmont Coastal Traffic Network (PCTN) , a local outlet for NTS traffic at 9 PM nightly.

100.0		 The Cape Fear ARS machine has medium coverage of Fayetteville, and fringe coverage of the southwest Triangle area (some people say Fayetteville is one corner of the Triangle).  It's another Possum Trot net repeater.

David WA4IZG sent me a note saying that the repeater is indeed in Butner, is carrier access, and is open to ARES use whenever needed.  It's been used by ARES and SKYWARN from time to time, and fills important territory. 

94 is also one of the main repeaters on the Outer Banks.  These repeaters rarely reach the Triangle area.  But if you travel to the Outer Banks beaches, you will want to follow this link to the Outer Banks Repeater Association and check out the extensive repeater network in the northeastern part of North Carolina.

KF4AGO		 This one is for those heading for Kerr Lake.  It's on the PCRN , and has coverage almost all the way down to the Triangle.  Note it's "minus" offset - one of the few repeaters above 147 MHz to slide that way.  The input is 146.46, so you don't want to use "46" as a simplex channel in this area. There's a 147.06 "minus" repeater in Charlotte, too.

82.5		 High on the TV-40 tower northeast of Sanford, this repeater covers from the Triangle to near the South Carolina line along I-95. It's on the PCRN network. KB4RGC reports a sharp, deep null through his house in southeast Raleigh.

This is the Triangle's home for the Possum Trot net .  Check in from "a little after six until little after seven" weekday mornings.

In the Triangle area, you may have some adjacent-channel splatter from the JARS 147.27 repeater. You may also cause some splatter on that repeater.
147.27 + Johnston County
AK4H		 The JARS repeater is actually a few feet inside Wake County, but we won't tell (oops, we just did). It's at the 850 foot level of the WRAL-TV tower, making it one of three two-meter machines on the WRAL towers). With antennas oriented to the southeast, the JARS blowtorch still covers the rest of the Triangle quite well. Could by the busiest repeater in the Triangle, though it's getting some competition from 145.21.  (See the note in the box above regarding the potential for adjacent channel interference to and from the 147.255 Level Cross 147.255 repeater).

It combines RF linking with multiple repeaters around the Triangle and networks reaching down east to Wilmington, and IRLP/Echolink with a variety of routine and on-demand links.  This hub machine is located on a tower just west of the fairgrounds in Raleigh.  Users are welcome to use this frequency if it provides the best coverage for their location.  This repeater has zero hang time (that is, the repeater's signal drops instantly when the user's signal drops). That's to facilitate being the linking hub. So you get nothing if you kerchunk it, which confuses new users. You can get a signal report from it — just punch *32 on your touch-tone pad (thanks KB4RGC).

The repeater is co-located with the two-meter repeater (145.49) on a tower near Capitol Blvd and Wake Forest Rd, just north of downtown Raleigh. Coverage is good in the city. HT coverage is spotty in Cary, and mobiles are gone before they get to Durham.

TRIANGLE 6 Meter REPEATERS
These repeaters all use a -1MHz offset.  There are several competing band plans for Six Meters.  SERA recognizes two offsets (see the SERA web site for details).  All of them are in use in various places around the country, and with Six Meters subject to sporadic E propagation, you can hear most anything in the Triangle when the band is open.

Note that 6 Meters is prone to skip propagation ("Sporadic" E-Layer skip in the late Spring, and F-2 skip anytime during the peak of a sunspot cycle. 107.2 		 OCRA ’s Six Meter machine is at the 1000 foot level of the WUNC-TV tower southwest of Chapel Hill. Performance is compromised some by its single dipole antenna that's a little too close to the tower structure (wtih a null to the south). My mobile signal from Cary was noisy at 5 watts, but solid at 35 watts. With TV channels 4 (on the tower) and 2 (in Greensboro) off the air (they moved to UHF when they went digital), some of the noise that plagued the receiver is gone. Gathering coverage and performance info as the repeater returned in mid-February 2011 after a long absence.

 Raleigh's first (and only) wide coverage 220 machine is on the air from "a very high location on the Auburn towers" says a slightly circumspect K4ITL.  It uses separate transmit and receive antennas. The transmit antenna is pretty much omnidirectional, but the receive antenna has a tower null to the southeast. Part of  the Piedmont Coastal Repeater Network.
