145.39- | Youngsville WB4TQD 82.5 |
This PCRN repeater has reappeared! Not real strong in the Cary area, so I'm not sure where it is, but it's back! (July 2012). This repeater has had a legendary history. For years, it was on 147.15, at about 1000' on a tower near Lake Wheeler. Old timers might remember it as being called "The Cary Repeater," and sort of the home of some Cary ARC members. It was eclipsed by the 146.88 machine long ago, changed frequency in a swap to get a new repeater up near Roanole Rapids (now on 147.15), was neglected for a long time, then off the air. Welcome back!
145.45 - | Durham WR4AGC |
Sponsored by the Durham FM Assn. (DFMA) , this machine provides local coverage from atop the VA Hospital in Durham. You can hit it mobile from the higher spots in Raleigh.
145.49 - | K4ITL 82.5 |
This repeater now sports the call sign K4ITL (Danny Hampton), and is located near Capitol Blvd and Wake Forest Road, just north of downtown Raleigh. Coverage is good in Raleigh. HT coverage is spotty in Cary. Mobiles are spotty by Durham. This is the Wake County ARES backup repeater. Danny did a quick call sign swap following the surprise death of Frank Lynch W4FAL in 2012. The repeater began life as part of the Capital Amateur Radio Society. located on the tower at Capitol Blvd. and Wake Forest Rd. (inside the Beltline). Trustee Billy Edwards K4BWC became a silent key in 2008. W4FAL took over as trustee of the memorial call sign W4BWC, and is still listed in the FCC database as trustee (July 2012). In 2011, Frank added a co-located UHF machine on 444.300 (now also signing K4ITL).

When you're driving down the highway and spot a car with an antenna and call letter plates, catch the driver's attention, and give the universal sign to go to 52 - hold up your hand with five fingers, then change to two fingers. Be careful flashing those fingers - you may end up with a case of road rage rather than a pleasant contact as you mobile down the road! |

146.61 | Raleigh off the air WB4TOP 131.8 |

146.64 - | Raleigh W4DW Winston-Salem |
"Six-Four" is the flagship repeater of the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society
. The
repeater is located at the 250' (350' HAAT) level of a tower owned by the state,
near the NC State Fairgrounds. The antenna pattern favors the
southeast, with a deep null to the norrhwest. Mobile coverage extends
east to I-95, but the null limits coverage in the RTP/Durham
area. RARS' co-channel neighbor on 146.64 is just 90 miles northwest. That's why the RARS repeater has a deep null in that direction. |
||||||||||||
146.670 - | Burlington K4EG |
The Alamance Amateur Radio Club runs this repeater. It covers the western Triangle area pretty well.
146.685 - | Grifton W4NBR 88.5 |
This wide coverage machine covers the eastern Triangle area from its 1800' elevation on a TV tower near Grifton. It's part of the PCRN network.
146.700 - | Dunn W4PEQ 82.5 PL Danville, Va. |
This machine covers the southern Triangle, and can be

The Dunn repeater shares the channel with a machine just across the Virginia line. Be careful from Raleigh that you're not keying up both of them. |

146.730 - | Raleigh off air W4BWC |
Fall 2005, off the air – this long-time Raleigh-area repeater was sponsored by Billy Edwards K4BWC, who became a silent key in 2008. The repeater is part of the IRLP ,
which allows users worldwide to link repeaters via the internet.

146.805- | Louisburg W4DCG 118.8 |
The Tar River ARC
holds the call sign, but their web site says the repeater os operated by
the Tri County Repeater Club. The repeater is on the Channel 47 TV
Tower east of
Louisburg. It has pretty good coverage into the Triangle from up
there, and I'm told it works well up I-95 to Roanoke Rapids. |
||||||||||||
146.82 - | Wilmington N4ILM 88.5 |
OK, this is pretty far from the Triangle, but it's a favorite repeater during band openings and trips to the beach. Operated by the Wilmington VHF Association , it's about 1700 feet up a TV tower in Winnabow, just southwest of Wilmington. And it's part of the Piedmont Coastal Repeater Network . You'll need 88.5 Hz PL to use this machine. It shares .82 with another wide coverage machine in Roaring Gap out in the mountains.
146.835- | Columbia KX4NC 131.8 |
At 1200' up the UNC-TV tower in Columbia, the Columbia Emergency Repeater Association machine doesn't cover the Triangle, but it's wide coverage will serve you well on your trip to the Outer Banks. You'll start hitting it just east of Rocky Mount.
146.85 - | Goldsboro K4CYP 88.54 |
This is a medium coverage repeater operated by the Wayne County Amateur Radio Association that just tickles the southeastern fringe of the Triangle. It's one of the Possum Trot net repeaters.
146.88 -
|
Raleigh WB4TQD |
At the 1400 foot level of the WRAL-TV tower, this is the flagship repeater of the Piedmont Coastal Repeater Network , which links repeaters across North Carolina and parts of Virginia, West Virginia and a bit of South Carolina. The .88 machine is the primary SKYWARN repeater in the Raleigh area, and is frequently used by ARES. It is also the home of the Piedmont Coastal Traffic Network (PCTN) , a local outlet for NTS traffic at 9 PM nightly.
146.91 - | Fayetteville K4MN 100.0 |
The Cape Fear ARS machine has medium coverage of Fayetteville, and fringe coverage of the southwest Triangle area (some people say Fayetteville is one corner of the Triangle). It's another Possum Trot net repeater.
146.94 - | Butner WA4IZG Outer Banks |
David WA4IZG sent me a note saying that the repeater is
indeed in Butner, is carrier access, and is open to ARES use whenever
needed. It's been used by ARES and SKYWARN from time to time,
and fills important territory.
94 is also one of the main repeaters on the Outer Banks. These repeaters rarely reach the Triangle area. But if you travel to the Outer Banks beaches, you will want to follow this link to the Outer Banks Repeater Association and check out the extensive repeater network in the northeastern part of North Carolina. |

146.985 - |
Durham KB4WGA 156.7 |
Owner
James Hicks K4JPE
became a silent key in 2009. The frequency was recorrdinated to KB4WGA,
who is rebuilding the repeater. As of March 2011, it's in local
test mode. John says it hopes to have it back on a tower soon. |

147.015 + | Raleigh KA0GMY 110.9 |
A 'backyard' repeater with local coverage in southeast Raleigh. |
||||||||||||
147.06 - | South Boston, VA KF4AGO |
This one is for those heading for Kerr Lake. It's on the PCRN , and has coverage almost all the way down to the Triangle. Note it's "minus" offset - one of the few repeaters above 147 MHz to slide that way. The input is 146.46, so you don't want to use "46" as a simplex channel in this area. There's a 147.06 "minus" repeater in Charlotte, too.
147.105 + | Broadway K4ITL 82.5 |
High on the TV-40 tower northeast of Sanford, this repeater covers from the Triangle to near the South Carolina line along I-95. It's on the PCRN network. KB4RGC reports a sharp, deep null through his house in southeast Raleigh.
147.135+ | Chapel Hill K4ITL 82.5 |
A PCRN repeater serving the western Triangle and out to about Ashboro from 1000 feet up the WUNC tower (right next to OCRA's 442.15 and 53.45 repeaters).
147.15 + | Roanoke Rapids 82.5 |
Actaually closer to Brinkleyville, about 15 miles southeast of Roanoke Rapids. It is on the PCRN link.
147.195 + | Raleigh off air K4ITL 82.5 |
This repeater moved to 145.21 (in the same location, on the WRAL TV tower), and the frequency was relinquished.
147.225 + | Hillsboro WR4AGC |
Have you seen that crowded tower just south of I-40, a mile
or so east of I-85? The Durham
FM Assn. (DFMA) machine acts like a wide-area repeater
from this site, reaching from Raleigh to Greensboro, with the help of
multiple receiver sites and a voting system. Open autopatch.
This is the Triangle's home for the Possum Trot net . Check in from "a little after six until little after seven" weekday mornings. |
||||||||||||
147.24+ | Carthage NC4ML 91.5 Boydton, VA |
You can hit this Moore County Amateur Radio Society machine from the southern end
of the Triangle area (a little north of Sanford). It's coverage favors south and west. Another weekender, covering Kerr Lake (but not the Triangle). |
||||||||||||
147.255+ |
Level Cross K4ITL 82.5 |
Huge coverage from 1550 feet AGL, with good mobile coverage from Apex to Statesville, and can reach into
Raleigh and Clayton (as well as Morganton, Charlotte, and Mt. Airy)
with some
combination of higher power and elevation. Danny K4ITL has
built
an incredible PCRN machine
here. Triad SKYWARN In the Triangle area, you may have some adjacent-channel splatter from the JARS 147.27 repeater. You may also cause some splatter on that repeater. |
||||||||||||
147.27 + | Johnston County AK4H |
The JARS repeater is actually a few feet inside Wake County, but we won't tell (oops, we just did). It's at the 850 foot level of the WRAL-TV tower, making it one of three two-meter machines on the WRAL towers). With antennas oriented to the southeast, the JARS blowtorch still covers the rest of the Triangle quite well. Could by the busiest repeater in the Triangle, though it's getting some competition from 145.21. (See the note in the box above regarding the potential for adjacent channel interference to and from the 147.255 Level Cross 147.255 repeater).
147.315 + | Rolesville KF4HFQ 88.5 |
From 390 feet, this repeater has excellent coverage of the eastern Triangle all the way into the RTP. Operated by the Franklin County Amateur Radio Club . Update: July 2012 - the club decided to activate the 88.5 tone requirement.
147.36 + | Durham NS4F 136.5 |
This quiet machine has medium coverage from downtown Durham, workable from the high spots in Raleigh. The call sign used to be W4REG. Same owner, Reggie changed vanities.
147.375 + | Graham K4GWH 114.8 |
This machine covers the western Triangle and the high spots in Raleigh. You'll need 114.8 PL.

441.725 | Raleigh
K4JDR 100.0 |
This is the "hub" repeater for the KD4RAA/K4JDR linking system which has extended its reach well beyond the Triangle. It combines RF linking with multiple repeaters around the Triangle and networks reaching down east to Wilmington, and IRLP/Echolink with a variety of routine and on-demand links. This hub machine is located on a tower just west of the fairgrounds in Raleigh. Users are welcome to use this frequency if it provides the best coverage for their location. This repeater has zero hang time (that is, the repeater's signal drops instantly when the user's signal drops). That's to facilitate being the linking hub. So you get nothing if you kerchunk it, which confuses new users. You can get a signal report from it — just punch *32 on your touch-tone pad (thanks KB4RGC).
441.95 | Sanford off air KG4HG 136.5 |
In

covering Alamance County very well and overlapping into surrounding

444.450 | Hillsborough WR4AGC 100.0 |
This DFMA repeater is on the same tower as the DFMA's 147.225 repeater, just south of I-40, east of the I-85 merge. It's listed as 100 Hz tone, but I've keyed it up carrier access.
444.475 | Cary KB4CTS 107.2 | Good local coverage from Cary. Used to be P-25 capable, but just analog FM now. See 442.600 for P-25 capability.

444.60 | Oxford NO4EL |
Chris KC4WXA reports his repeater is on the air from Oxford. I can't hit it from my home in north Cary, but I did hear it ID. Chris says a good mobile can reach it from Durham.
444.650 | Middlesex off air KG4EDW 100 |
Pretty wide coverage from 800 feet up the WRDU tower near the eastern edge of Wake County. Mobiles can hit it in Cary, and east past Tarboro. Linked to KD4RAA's "test bed" for repeater linking. (July 2012 - seems to have been off the air for a while).
444.675 | Raleigh off air KD4RAA 100.0 |
Jaunary 2011 - this repeater appears to be off the air.
444.70 | Rocky Mount N4JEH |
Sponsored by the Stony Creek Repeater Association . Not audible here in Cary, but likely reaches the eastern fringes of the Triangle and "Triangle-East". Full-time link with other Stony Creek R.A. repeaters. Reported by Bert WA4TLI.
444.775 | Cary K4JDR 100.0 |
Near downtown Cary . Part of the KD4RAA/K4JDR
full-time link system , with autopatch and IRLP dial-up access on
all repeaters. Most of the repeaters use 100 Hz tone.

444.825 | Raleigh K4GWH 146.2 |
Formerly
the eastern terminus of the defunct Graham Repeater Assn.
linked system, this is the last of those repeaters still on the air.
It's on the tower at Strickland and Old Lead Mine (everybody
thinks that’s where the RARS repeaters were, but it isn't). It's
up about 250
feet. Co-located with 145.19. |

444.8875 | Burlington AK4EG D-STAR | D-STAR/Gateway coverage into the western Triangle area from Cane Mountain in south Alamance County. Note that this is on one those "in-between" channels that SERA is testing for narrow modes like D-STAR. See also:145.32 MHz.
444.925 | Durham KB4WGA 94.8 PL |
March 2011 update: John
KB4WGA reports that his repeater is back on the air after a year-long
rebuild. Tone changed from 100 to 94.8.. Backup power will last for
weeks. It will again be part of the KD4RAA/K4JDR
full-time link system
, but isn't connected to the link yet (and still isn't in July 2012). It's up 500 feet, and seems to be working very well. |

444.950 | Rolesville KG4HFQ 88.5 |
This Franklin County ARC had been silent for several years, but in July 2012, I began hearing it on the air again. Welcome back! |
||||||||||
444.975 | Castalia N4JEH 107.2 |
Sponsored by the Stony Creek Repeater Association . Not audible here in Cary, but likely reaches the northeast Triangle. Full-time link with other Stony Creek R.A. repeaters. Reported by Bert WA4TLI.
446.0 | National Simplex | This is the "146.52" of UHF, but it's not nearly as busy as its two-meter counterpart. Sometimes I think this must be the "National Crossband Repeat" channel... the rest of the UHF bandplan remains a mystery to most UHF operators (hint: download my bandplan chart !) |
|
Frequency | Location Callsign Tone |
Notes - all repeaters listed have minus 1 MHz offsets, per the SERA band plan. Note that 6 Meters is prone to skip propagation ("Sporadic" E-Layer skip in the late Spring, and F-2 skip anytime during the peak of a sunspot cycle. So you can hear signals from thousands of miles away. Other parts of the country use different channels and repeater offsets (with minus 500 kHz being the most common). |
52.525 |
Nationwide |
The six-meter national simplex channel.
Band openings on six can make this frequency come alive. The odd
choice of frequency is a legacy from the distant past - the rest of six
meters uses 20 kHz channel spacing on the odd number frequencies. |
53.03 | Raleigh K4ITL |
Located near Lake Wheeler in south Raleigh. Pretty good coverage, but doesn't match Danny's 2 Meter machines (yet). |
53.37 | Youngsville KD4MYE 88.5 |
Co-located on Roger's tower near Youngsville with his other repeaters. Pretty good coverage of the eastern Triangle, and I've worked it with spotty mobile coverage from Chapel Hill and west of Durham. |
53.45 | Chapel Hill W4UNC 107.2 |
OCRA ’s Six Meter machine is at the 1000 foot level of the WUNC-TV tower southwest of Chapel Hill. Performance is compromised some by its single dipole antenna that's a little too close to the tower structure (wtih a null to the south). My mobile signal from Cary was noisy at 5 watts, but solid at 35 watts. With TV channels 4 (on the tower) and 2 (in Greensboro) off the air (they moved to UHF when they went digital), some of the noise that plagued the receiver is gone. Gathering coverage and performance info as the repeater returned in mid-February 2011 after a long absence. |

Frequency | Location Callsign Tone |
Notes - When Danny K4ITL announced that a new PCRN 220 repeater was on the air from way up in the air in Raleigh, I figured it was time to add 220 to this web page. I was surprised at how many repeaters there really are in the Triangle area. |
224.16 | Raleigh K4ITL |
Raleigh's first (and only) wide coverage 220 machine is on the air from "a very high location on the Auburn towers" says a slightly circumspect K4ITL. It uses separate transmit and receive antennas. The transmit antenna is pretty much omnidirectional, but the receive antenna has a tower null to the southeast. Part of the Piedmont Coastal Repeater Network. |
224.22 | Louisburg KD4CPV |
Co-located with the 146.805 machine on the Channel 47 TV Tower near Louisburg. Good coverage into north Raleigh, and the higher spots into Cary. |
224.26 | Hillsborough WA4WTX |
Co-located with the DFMA 147.225 repeater, just off I-40 a few miles east of I-85. |
224.54 | Mt. Mitchell WA4BVW |
Well, gee... I put the two meter Mt. Mitchell in the chart, but not the six meter or 70 cm repeaters. I guess I just want to encourage 220 operation. . |
224.58 | Rocky Mount KR4AA |
Also on the Channel 47 TV Tower near Louisburg, but a little lower than 224.22. Similar coverage. |
224.64 | Raleigh off air. W4RNC |
Lightning destroyed the old R ARS' 220 machine. We haven't seen enough interest to replace it. Anyone want to chip in? Contact KN4AQ. |
224.70 | Coats K4JDR 88.5 |
K4JDR
reports that this machine is running 18 watts from 315 feet in the
Benson/Coats area, sponsored
by the Tri-County Repeater Group. Coverage is good in the
southern Triangle area and far to the south and east. Downtown
Raleigh to Cary is on the fringe
of mobile coverage. Ron says the antenna is shadowed to the
northwest and northeast by some big microwave horns. |
224.72 | Trenton WA4DAN 91.5 |
Eastern NC has had wide-coverage 220 for years, between this repeater (at 1000 feet on the same tower as the 145.21 PCRN machine) and the Grifton and Rocky Mt. repeaters. Like it's two meter sibling, it tickles the southeast Triangle unless the band is open a bit. |
224.84 | Grifton WA4DAN |
Another wide-coverage repeater, co-located with the 146.685 machine. This also covers the eastern Triangle under normal band conditions. |
224.88 | Cary W4JYV 88.5 |
Good
area coverage from a 180 foot tower in north
Cary. |
