Packet

Explore the world of packet radio, a digital mode used for sending and receiving data over the air on VHF and UHF frequencies.

The most prevalent form of current packet radio is the TARPN network. The purpose of the network is to provide radio-based internet functionality in the form of messaging and chat functions. No internet allowed. Just radio to communicate with a browser-based chat client with othe hams.

By building a packet node, you can learn about many aspects of ham radio: antennas, feedlines, power distribution, terminal node controllers, raspberry pi, custom boards, and soldering.

General Ham Resources

More details on the TARPN network:
An ever expanding group of Amateur Radio operators are working together to use many VHF/UHF radios to link multiple ham radio stations in a digital network for the purpose of having fun in a fun, educational, hobbyist-controlled environment, built using ham radio infrastructure based on packet radio technology. No Internet traffic is required or even desired!

Local Club Activities

While not an official RARS program, several RARS members participate in the local packet TARPN network. It is called NCPACKET. The network spans from Mebane to Wendell and from Wake Forest to Apex.
