And they're off.
The fellow in the orange tank top won the race.
there they go
More than 1000 runners poured through downtown Raleigh.
Liz and Bill at the Start
Liz KF4UQZ shadowed Kelly, just like she did at the Old Reliable race.  Well, there was one difference.  Kelly tends to hang around loud PA systems, so note the earphones Liz found this time!  If you want to sound like an old-timer, you'll call them "cans".

Max KO4TV was a SAG wagon.  Here he's bringing in the race's only real casualty - the wheelchair racer who was hit by a car in the first few minutes of the race.  The driver ran a police barricade, and ignored an officer directing traffic.

The racer was OK, but his chair was badly damaged.  The driver went to jail.  Note the nice magnetic sign.

10 Mile point Aid Station
K1RCB

Getting a little deeper on the course, this is the 10-mile Aid station, with Bob K1RCB as the ham-in-residence.

KN4AQ kept insisting that people not call them "rest stops."  "This is a Marathon... people don't rest!"

Runner #196 wasn't listening to Gary.

Yes, it was cold.  The day started in the mid 30's, and barely broke 40.  It only rained a little.

KG4FIQ at mile 8
Nice, cold Gatorade, that's what you want!  Bob KG4IZA at Mile 20 watches a volunteer pour some more.  Below that, Larry KG4FIQ mans the Mile 8 station, and Alicia KF4ZIX shivers at Mile 15.  Alicia had to beg to get her picture taken.  She's Ralph's XYL.  C'mon, Alicia, let's hear you on the air!

Clement KD4BMA is at mile 4, or at about 18½ on the second loop, in the neighborhoods of southeast Raleigh.  The runner in the background looks lonely.  Clement had the net to keep him company.
