Towers

Towers

Before the advent of the homeowner's associations, when homeowners had more space, hams often put up towers to hold their HF beams.

These days, many of those towers need to come down and get passed on to a new generation of hams. Tower work involves installing, maintaining, and safely using towers for antennas.

General Ham Resources

You wouldn't believe the incredible towers up in some locations. There are companies whose only job is to put up and maintain ham radio towers (and commercial ones too)

Take a look at the W2RE Facebook channel to see some amazing towers and antenna systems.

Most ham towers are 50 to 100 feet tall. For smaller towers, Rohn 20G or 25G are popular, For larger ones, Rohn 45G is common.

Many of the Raleigh area repeaters are on commercial towers. These can be up to 1,500 feet tall!

Local Club Activities

RARS has an unofficial group of volunteers who take down and put up antennas and towers. The team includes a climber and several ground crew to remove and dismantle (or assemble and raise) the equipment.

It is a rewarding side hobby because you get to help a ham on both ends of the process.

If you're interested in becoming involved in this team, go comment in the RARS Discord antennas channel tower work thread.
